Family Must-Do's
The twin romantic getaways of Lonavala and Khandala need no introduction. Known as the Jewel of the Sahyadris, these hill stations have always been a hot favorite for movie makers and Mumbaikars alike. The cool climate and refreshingly fresh breezes can always soothe your body and mind alike. The calm and tranquil atmosphere works wonders and is sure to rejuvenate your spirit. These quiet towns receive their fair share of travellers during the summers, when families flock here for that much needed respite from the heat. There is much to ee and do here, including boating across the lake or trekking up to one of the several forts. Plan a quick getaway in the summers for that rejuvenating respite.

Things to See
  • Ryewood Park: This is a favourite spot with honeymooners and is defined by tall trees and plenty of space for picnics, as well as a Shiva Temple. Located across the park is an old Christian Cemetery that has gravestones dating to over hundred years old. However, the adornments from most tombstones have been stolen.

  • Bushy Dam: Situated 6 kms outside Lonavala, this dam is one of the most popular spots. The dam is especially busy during the monsoons when huge crowds sit on the dam steps as the water flows behind.

  • Duke’s Nose: This is located about 12 kms from Lonavala and is one of the most prominent attractions in the area. It gets its name from Duke of Wellington and is a busy hiking trail in Khandala offering beautiful views of the region.

  • Forts: Several forts in and around Lonavala offer superb trekking trails for the adventurous. The Lohagad Fort is one of the most popular and gets its name from the belief that it was unconquerable. When climbing towards it, watch out for the Buddhist caves and the dargah that was built by the Mughals. Situated across The Visapur Fort is situated opposite Lohagad and is a much larger one. It has remnants of water tanks, ponds and other ruins. Located closeby is the Tikona Fort, which has an ancient Buddhist Cave and some water tanks. The Tung Fort was earlier a watch tower and provides ramparts that once served as lookout points for Lohagad, Visapur and Tikona forts as well as the Pawna Lake. Located away from these forts is the Koregad Fort, which is surrounded by several ponds.

  • Lakes: Tungarli Lake is best visited during and after the monsoon, and it retains deep waters till January. The Pawna Lake, Lonavala Lake and Valvan Lake are popular picnic spots and offer great views of the surrounding region.

  • Caves: Since Lonavala was a much frequented site by the Buddhists, there are several marks left behind by them. Especially visited are the Karla Caves, noted for their rock-cut architecture and two rows of carved pillars in the main hall. Located across the Karla Caves are the Bhaja Caves, whose rock-cut architecture is better preserved.

  • Fishing: Lonavala is known for its superb angling opportunities and early mornings are the best times to watch anglers at work or even lay your own bait! Fishing gear is generally available here, though it's best to come prepared. Remember to check with locals about any possible illegal areas to lay the bait.

Gourmet Treats
Lonavala has a number of eating areas, road-side dhabas and restaurants serve everything from South Indian to Chinese fares. For those who are hiking up the forts, eat at the Restaurant Indrani, which serves South Indian and Chinese food. The Dukes Retreat and Fariyas Resorts are some of the better options that have their own coffee shops and restaurants. The Lonavla Restaurant offers delicious Indian cuisine. It is well-known for its tandoori dishes and serves vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian. Located near Hotel Gurukripa is the Mehful Bar & Restaurant.

Shopping Fiesta
Lonavala offers some very basic shopping items. Pick up some fresh fruit jams, sevs and wafers. And if you have a sweet tooth, remember to pick up some chikki, which is a sweet made with jaggery and nuts and available in quite a few varieties.
