A small town on the banks of rivers Rapti and Rohini in Uttar Pradesh, Gorakhpur was known as Ramgram and had the honor of being the capital of the erstwhile Koliya Empire. It got its present name, Gorakhpur, from saint Gorakhnath. He was a local saint who is still revered much by the local population. Gorakhpur also holds importance for Buddhists as it is associated with the life of Gautam Buddha. Gorakhpur was a major center of activity for the freedom fighters too.
